JHARKHALI,SUNDERBAN: LEARNING CENTER

ABWU has initiated learning centers in Jharkhali, Sunderban, to cater to the needs of disadvantaged children of this area, who are at risk of dropping out of school. With a team comprising two educators, these centers aim to provide supplementary education to prevent dropout rates among children from escalating. Many students here are first-generation learners facing challenges in keeping pace with the standard curriculum. The women and children of this village of Sunder ban with whom we have interacted, belong to a very vulnerable background, many among the women are ‘tiger widows’ and live in acute poverty. Growing up amidst such adversities, the children face barriers to accessing quality education. ABWU aims to mentor such children, to bring them back to mainstream.

Vocational training in association with Women’s Coordinating Council, for girls of Economically Weaker Section of central Kolkata

In collaboration with the Women’s Coordinating Council, ABWU has initiated a three-month vocational training program targeting girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in central Kolkata. Led by two proficient instructors, the girls are being equipped with skills in sewing, block printing, and weaving. No prior training is necessary for enrollment in this course, welcoming learners from all backgrounds.

We anticipate that upon completion of this program, these girls will take significant strides towards self-reliance and rehabilitation. Our sincere appreciation goes to WCC for their invaluable support and encouragement in providing such vital training opportunities to girls in need.

NIOS:

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

ABWU has initiated the Open Basic Education Program of NIOS in its shelter home for first generation learners and girls who are deprived of education as they missed the opportunity at an appropriate age because of marginalized circumstances. This program is for !4+ years age group, adolescent and adults, at A,B,C level that are equivalent to classes III, V, VIII of the formal system. This program runs parallel to our ABWU school, which follows the mainstream curriculum of West Bengal board.

We at ABWU hope that this initiative will provide better opportunities for many of its residents

Project of three learning centers for the drop- outs:

Aim of these learning centers is to provide to the disadvantaged children, of the near by locality, with extra support for formal education and nutritious food, to prevent them from being drop-outs and getting involved in anti social activities. Our objective is to give them extra coaching in these classes since they are, in general, first generation learners and are unable to follow the formal class-room curriculum. The women and children with whom we have been working, belong to a very vulnerable background, most of them being victims of violence – mental and physical. They are resistant to any kind of communication. Some children from slum areas do not get adequate nutrition and proper parental guidance for education. They grow up in adverse conditions and slowly, they lose their identity. Our aim is to mentor such children, to bring them back to main stream.

We need funds for these learning centers urgently otherwise we may have to close down the centers.

Please donate for this cause, the minimum cost of running a center is Rs.136,000 per annum per center.

Vocational training for adult Women:

Under the tutelage of Ma Sarada Swanirvar Kendra, some of the young women and senior women of Home have joined a six month long training program called “Jute Diversified Training”. These learners from our home are presently learning to create items by using raw and processed Jute . We hope that completion of thisprogram will take these students a long way towards self reliance and rehabilitation. We are very grateful to Ma Sarada Swanirvar Kendra (Affiliated by WBSCTE and West Bengal Swarojgar Corporation Ltd) for encouraging and providing such training to our wards.
